Aquafin, responsible for the development and management of water treatment infrastructure in Flanders, is building a new concrete bunker for sludge storage in Ghent. This structure is being built by contractor Besix, with AC Materials as concrete supplier, under the technical guidance of BM Engineering.

The concrete bunker is built with a sliding box and requires a continuous concrete supply (24/24). Due to the heavy chemical and physical stress (sludge storage up to 20 m in height, environmental classes EE3/XA2/XF1, etc.), sustainable, integral waterproofing was chosen with Penetron Admix SB.

Activities carried out

The concrete structure was protected by an integral crystalline waterproofing system. The project included:

  • Integral waterproofing of the foundation plate (approx. 753 m³) and walls (up to 2,360 m³) with Penetron Admix SB, added to the plant.
  • Repair critical areas such as honeycomb areas and tie holes with Penetron and Penecrete Mortar.

This approach provides sustainable protection against water penetration and significantly increases the lifespan of the bunker.

Products used

  • Penetron Admix SB: for permanent integral waterproofing of concrete.
  • Penetron: liquid crystalline coating for repair and extra protection.
  • Penecrete Mortar: for repairing concrete defects and details.

Thanks to the cooperation with all partners, a sustainable and forward-looking solution could be provided, without the need for external membranes or coatings.
