Renovation of cooling tower near Aperam, Genk
Aperam
Aperam, a world leader in stainless steel and specialty steels, has several industrial sites, including their location in Genk. This location plays a crucial role in the production of high-quality steel products. One of the vital parts of the factory is the cooling tower, which, after years of intensive use, suffered serious concrete damage, cracking and leaks. These problems led to further degradation of the concrete and corrosion of the reinforcement, which increased the structural risk.

Activities carried out
To prevent further damage and extend the life of the cooling tower, it was decided to carry out a thorough renovation without taking the cooling tower out of use. The renovation process consisted of:
- Crack repair: All cracks larger than 0.5 mm were repaired with Penetron Slurry and Penegrite Mortar.
- Injection: In certain areas, injections were performed with Penetron Inject to ensure a durable seal and prevent further leaks.
- Protection layers: The entire cooling tower was eventually provided with two layers of Penetron Slurry, which serve as additional protection against future degradation.
This renovation restored the structural integrity of the cooling tower, making it resistant to harsh industrial conditions again. In addition, the renovation was able to take place without interrupting the production processes at Aperam.
